What is used to make the baskets?1. The Bolga baskets are made with a grass that grows in abundance in Northern Ghana. This grass is called Veta Vera grass(straw). This is also locally known as kinkahe in Ghana.
Where in Ghana are the baskets made?1. These authentic Bolga baskets are exclusively woven by Frafra people around the town of Bolgatanga in Northern Ghana. For many generations Bolgatanga has been the crafts center of Northern Ghana, and weaving baskets has been a big tradition for many years.
These baskets are now formally made by the Frafra people. They are the main ethnic group from Bolgatanga. They have perfected the basket making process, and a majority of the people in Bolgatanga create baskets as a full time job. The Frafra people are unique weavers of this style of basket, and are continuing to pass the tradition down to their children.
Children learn the basics of splitting grass, and rolling it on their legs to twist it at a young age. Mothers teach this process to them so that they may start out with small baskets, and over time when they're adults they have become masters of basket making techniques. This is also what makes the Bolga baskets made in Bolgatanga one of the most unique, and beautiful baskets made in all of Africa.
